An average of 275-325 kg. body weight from the total 80 heifers with age range of 18-30 months were selected in order to be tested in the 2 breeding seasons (hot wet and hot dry) for their first conception rate, A.I. index and cost per conception. For each season three groups of heifers were imposed by randomized design : (1) control, (2) imposed with PGF2?, and (3) imposed with Progestagen (SMB), and pregnancy diagnosis was determined by ultra sound sonography at 30 days from A.I. The results in each group of the hot wet season showed the conception rate to be 45.5%, 25.0% and 41.7%, A.I. index and cost per conception were 2.20, 4.00 and 2.40 with 24,735.20 baht, 24,746.54 baht and 24,222.91 baht per conception (p>0.05). Whereas in the hot dry breeding season resulted in conception rate were found to be 53.3%, 40.0% and 40.0%, A.I. index and cost per conception were 1.88, 2.5 and 2.50 with 23,561.92 baht, 23,934.30 baht (p<0.05) and 23,658.60 baht per conception for the 3 respective treatments |

After 7 years of project development it was found that 6.97% and 62.74% of farmers inside and outside the project area terminated their dairy production. The overall analysis showed that 34.04% of farmers whose educational background was less than grade 7 terminated the dairy occupation while 3.19% of them with over grade 7 did withdraw form the project after 2 years of production. 52.23% of farmers with 1 to 10 cows withdrew after 2 years of production whereas farmers with more than 10 cows still proceed through their occupation. From the analysis of data obtained from 59 households who still carry on the project revealed that the project area and levels of education of farmers had significant contributions (p<0.05) on their success. However, the farm size did not have significant contribution on their profit (p>0.05) throughout 7 years period of the study. |

Each producer, a member of dairy cooperative, was asked to complete a questionnaire under guidance of a veterinarian in order to obtain the production cost data. The CoopLIVE system was installed at the milk collecting center to continuously gather data concerning reproduction and milk production for 1 year. The production cost per kilogram of raw milk produced was 8.80 bahts. The first three costly items were concentrate cost (33%), forage cost (18%) and unpaid family labor (16%). Under current situation where the price per kilogram of raw milk is 8.50 bahts small holders seem to be more competitive than large commercial herds since commercial herds need to use hired labor while small holders are profitable from their unpaid family labor. The production indices indicated that there was an epidemic of poor production performance among small dairy holders. The averages of calving to conception intervals (139), days dry (109) and days open (144) were too long to allow efficient production. Problems may relate to preservice heat detection and/or post calving anestrus due to excessive weight loss during lactation peak. The situation clearly indicated that the opportunity to reduce production cost is existed. Replacement herd size as percentage of milking herd (PREPL) and average days open (DOP) exhibited positive relationships with the production cost while lactation length (LL) and daily milk production/cow/day (DP) correlated to that in opposite direction. This means that the higher PREPL or DOP is the higher the production cost. Similarly, a reverse conclusion can be made with LL and DP. |
